Ghana, Peru deepen cooperation on cocoa, mining and agriculture

Ghana and Peru have expressed renewed interest in strengthening bilateral cooperation, with parliamentary, economic and agricultural partnerships featuring prominently in discussions between the two countries.

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, hosted the Ambassador of Peru for a high-level meeting focused on deepening relations between Ghana and Peru.

Mr Ahiafor expressed appreciation to the people of Peru for including Ghana’s Parliament in celebrations marking Peru’s 205th Independence Anniversary.

A key proposal from the meeting was the establishment of a Parliamentary Friendship Association between Ghana’s Parliament and its Peruvian counterpart.

Mr Ahiafor assured the Ambassador that steps would be taken to formalise the association, which is expected to provide a platform for greater legislative engagement, dialogue and exchange between the two countries.

The discussions also identified opportunities for cooperation in technology transfer, mining and agriculture.

Particular attention was paid to Peru’s experience in fish farming, cocoa value addition and promoting cocoa consumption, with Ghana exploring areas where it could benefit from Peru’s expertise.

The two sides also discussed the challenge of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, and approaches to strengthening regulatory systems.

Peru shared its experience in regulating mining activities, while Mr Ahiafor outlined Ghana’s efforts to license small-scale miners and formalise their operations.

The meeting ended with a shared interest in international cooperation to tackle illegal mining, alongside an openness to increased investment in Ghana’s cocoa sector.

The discussions are expected to contribute to stronger parliamentary and economic ties between Ghana and Peru, particularly in agriculture, mining and cocoa value addition.
