Ghana Library Authority eyes AI-driven learning reforms

The Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) is exploring ways to integrate artificial intelligence and digital literacy into library services to support teachers and learners in an increasingly AI-driven education system.

The move follows the participation of a GhLA delegation, led by its Executive Director, in the UNESCO Digital Learning Week in Paris, France, held on the theme “Education in the Age of AI.”

The discussions examined the changing role of teachers, responsible use of AI, personalised learning and the need for education systems to equip learners with skills to navigate emerging technologies.

Secretary-General of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, Professor Osman Tahidu Damba, who spoke from Ghana’s perspective, highlighted the role of teachers in shaping the responsible use of AI and policies to support their effective integration of the technology into education.

For the GhLA, the discussions offered lessons on strengthening library services through expanded AI and digital literacy programmes and providing teachers and learners with reliable learning resources.

The Authority also identified the need to help users critically assess information, particularly as AI-generated content becomes increasingly common, while using technology to create more personalised learning opportunities across libraries.

The Authority said AI should complement rather than replace learning, with its application focused on making education more accessible, inclusive and effective.
