The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) has issued a formal apology to Prof. Wazi Apoh following the circulation of a false claim wrongly attributed to the academic at the Ho Regional Museum.
The controversy stems from a viral video involving Ghanaian vlogger Goshers and his Zambian companion, Lilian Chipeso, in which a tour guide at the museum alleged that the Virgin Mary migrated to Ghana and lived in the Volta Region for 40 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In a statement dated April 30, 2026, the GMMB acknowledged the incident, noting with concern that the claim was made by a security officer who had assumed the role of a tour guide at the Ho Regional Museum.
According to the Board, the statement regarding the Virgin Mary was falsely attributed to Prof. Apoh.
The GMMB clarified that the claim is entirely baseless, stressing that Prof. Apoh has never made such assertions in any forum, including his academic publications.
“The claim attributed to him is therefore unfounded and misleading,” the statement emphasised.
The Board further indicated that steps have been taken to address the situation and prevent the further spread of the misinformation.
“GMMB wishes to retract the said statement in its entirety and extend its sincere apologies to Prof. Wazi Apoh for the misattribution,” the statement said.
It also urged individuals and institutions that may have shared or published the claim to take immediate corrective action to limit its circulation.
“Institutions and individuals who may have shared or published the said statement are accordingly urged to retract and remove such content to prevent further spread of the misinformation,” the statement added.
The GMMB expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging the potential reputational damage caused to the academic.
“GMMB regrets any inconvenience or reputational harm caused to the respected professor. Kindly accept our sincere and unreserved apologies,” the statement concluded.
