Vice-President reaffirms SOE reforms at 2026 SIGA Stakeholder Conference

Vice-President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Thursday, 19 March, reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening the performance and accountability of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), describing them as central to Ghana’s economic reset agenda.

Speaking at the 2026 Stakeholder Conference organised by the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), the Vice-President underscored the strategic importance of SOEs in managing national assets, generating revenue, and providing employment across the country.

She, however, acknowledged that persistent challenges—such as operational inefficiencies, financial losses, and weak accountability structures—continue to weigh heavily on public finances.

Opoku-Agyemang said ongoing reforms, being spearheaded by the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with SIGA, are aimed at improving corporate governance and ensuring financial sustainability within the sector.

“These reforms are focused on enforcing performance contracts, improving transparency, and strengthening oversight mechanisms across State-Owned Enterprises,” she noted.

According to the Vice-President, government is also undertaking a comprehensive review of the State’s equity portfolio to enhance performance and guide future strategic investments.

She further highlighted the importance of the Public Enterprises League Table (PELT), describing it as a critical tool for promoting transparency, benchmarking performance, and encouraging continuous improvement among SOEs.

This year’s PELT Awards, she added, will recognise institutions that demonstrate excellence and efficiency in the public enterprise space.

Reaffirming government’s broader vision, Opoku-Agyemang stressed that well-governed and high-performing SOEs are key to reducing fiscal risks and accelerating national development.

She noted that the long-term goal is to transform public enterprises into sustainable drivers of growth and shared prosperity for Ghanaians.
