Stanley Nwabali emerged as Nigeria’s unlikely hero on Saturday night, January 17, as the Super Eagles defeated Egypt on penalties to claim the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

After over 95 minutes of near misses and VAR drama ended goalless, it was the nerve of the goalkeeper that finally separated the sides. Nwabali produced two decisive saves in a tense shootout to hand Nigeria a hard-earned victory and a podium finish to cap their tournament in style.

The third-place playoff between Nigeria and Egypt was anything but a consolation affair. Both teams approached the match with intensity, backed by a lively crowd of 38,113 supporters who created a fitting atmosphere for a continental showdown.

Nigeria thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half when Akor Adams powered home a close-range header following a well-worked move. However, celebrations were cut short after a VAR review ruled the effort out for a foul in the build-up, leaving the Super Eagles visibly frustrated.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Nigeria enjoying spells of possession and Egypt threatening on the counter through Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. Ademola Lookman had a goal disallowed early after the restart for offside, adding to Nigeria’s sense of injustice on the night.

As the match wore on, injuries and substitutions disrupted the rhythm. Semi Ajayi was forced off late on, while Eric Chelle introduced fresh legs in search of a breakthrough that never came. Despite several dangerous moments at both ends, neither side could find the decisive touch in normal time or additional time. Hence, the penalty kicks proved unavoidable.

The shootout was a test of composure, and it swung decisively in Nigeria’s favour. Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Akor Adams and Ademola Lookman all converted their spot-kicks. Egypt responded through Rami Rabia and Mahmoud Saber, but the pressure told on their biggest names.

Omar Marmoush failed to beat Nwabali. The Choppa United goalkeeper also denied Mohamed Salah, drawing roars of approval from the Nigerian supporters. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru also missed for Nigeria, briefly keeping Egypt in contention, but the Super Eagles goalkeeper had the final say.

Nwabali’s outstanding goalkeeping not only won the Super Eagles a bronze medal at the AFCON 2025, but it also earned him the Man-of-the-match award in the third-place game.
