Police nab bus driver, mate over 1,050 rounds of ammunition on Savelugu route

Police have arrested a commercial bus driver and his mate after intercepting a vehicle carrying more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition on the Accra–Tamale–Savelugu route.

The suspects, identified as 42-year-old driver Mohammed Gzali and his mate, Mohammed Jabir, were picked up on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at about 7:00pm during a routine police operation at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier.

According to police, the Kia Grand Bird bus, with registration number AK 1309–21, was stopped for inspection while travelling from Accra to Tamale and onward to Savelugu.

Officers on duty reportedly became suspicious during the inspection and, acting on the directive of the Divisional Commander, conducted a detailed search of the vehicle.

The search led to the discovery of a fertiliser sack concealed among passengers’ luggage, containing 1,050 rounds of AAA and BB cartridge ammunition.

During preliminary interrogation, the driver allegedly told police that the sack was given to him at the bus terminal by an unidentified person as a parcel. He further indicated that the consignment was to be delivered to an individual he knew only as “Oboye” in Tamale.

The bus has since been impounded, while the ammunition has been seized as exhibits for investigations.

Both the driver and his mate remain in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations as efforts intensify to trace the source and intended destination of the ammunition.

Police have assured the public that updates will be provided as investigations progress.
