Police intercepts 1,000 rounds of ammunition in Nkwanta

A joint security operation in the Oti Region has led to the interception of 1,000 rounds of ammunition during two separate intelligence-led operations at Nkwanta, according to the Ghana Police Service.

The operation, which took place on 17 May 2026, resulted in the arrest of two suspects, while another unidentified suspect reportedly escaped.

In a press release issued by the Oti Regional Police Headquarters in Dambai, police said the first operation involved a night patrol team that intercepted a 66-seater MGI bus with registration number AS 248-P at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta.

A search conducted on the vehicle led to the retrieval of 750 live J/G cartridges concealed in a black polythene bag containing three brown boxes, each packed with 250 rounds of ammunition.

Police identified the suspect as 53-year-old Hudu Mahama, who was serving as the driver’s mate on the bus.

According to the statement, Hudu Mahama admitted ownership of the ammunition during preliminary interrogation.

In a separate operation on the same day, a joint Police-Military team pursuing a motorbike rider retrieved another box containing 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges after the box reportedly fell from the suspect’s motorbike.

The unidentified rider, however, managed to escape from the security team.

Police said preliminary inspection of the retrieved ammunition led to the arrest of another suspect, identified as 57-year-old Christian Kwasi Alonise.

The statement noted that both suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations.

Security officials also disclosed that the retrieved ammunition has been retained as exhibits for evidential purposes, while efforts are ongoing to retrieve a second box allegedly carried away by the fleeing rider.

The Police further assured residents that the joint security team remains committed to restoring and maintaining peace and security in the area.

The statement was signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police John Nchor of the Public Affairs Unit of the Oti Region.
