Police arrest teacher over viral assault on female student at Nyinahin Catholic SHS

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a teacher of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School, identified as 39-year-old Eric Buernortey Apaflo, following a viral video showing the assault of a female student at the school.

The suspect, who also serves as a hostel caretaker, was picked up by the Nyinahin District Police Patrol Team on June 8, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m., after reports emerged of an assault involving an 18-year-old student, Patience Chibu.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the teacher confronted the student, along with some male students, over alleged misconduct at the school’s hostel. The confrontation reportedly escalated into a misunderstanding, during which the teacher assaulted the female student.

The incident, which was captured on video and widely circulated on social media, sparked outrage among students, some of whom allegedly retaliated by pelting stones at the suspect.

Tensions further escalated as some youth from the town reportedly moved to the school hostel in what appeared to be an attempt to attack the teacher. The situation, however, was brought under control through the swift intervention of the police patrol team.

A Police Medical Report Form has been issued to the victim to undergo medical examination and receive treatment, while the suspect remains in police custody assisting with investigations.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has urged the public to remain calm and to resort to lawful and peaceful means in addressing grievances and disputes, cautioning against acts that could further inflame tensions.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
