Police arrest 77 suspects in major anti-drug operation

The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested 77 suspects during a large-scale anti-drug operation conducted in Tamale and Savelugu.

The operation, carried out on Monday, 23 March 2026, at around 9:30 p.m., involved 33 personnel from the Special Operations Team, known locally as “Red Maria.” The exercise forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to combat drug trafficking and related criminal activities across the region.

Police said the operation targeted several known drug hotspots. It began in Lamashegu, where one suspect was apprehended, before moving to Aboabo Market, where another individual was arrested in possession of a powdered substance suspected to be cocaine.

Further intelligence led officers to NOBISCO, where an alleged supplier was detained; however, a search of his residence did not yield incriminating evidence.

The operation was then extended to Savelugu, where a major raid on a known drug-peddling enclave resulted in the arrest of 74 additional suspects.

During the exercise, police recovered several items, including seven motorbikes, a Toyota Camry, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and 10 sachets of Tramadol.

All suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations. Those found culpable will be arraigned in court, the police confirmed.

The Northern Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to tackling drug-related crimes and ensuring public safety. Authorities have also urged members of the public to support law enforcement efforts by providing timely and credible information.
