O’Reilly Brace Fires Manchester City To 2026 EFL Cup Glory Over Arsenal

Manchester City claimed the 2026 EFL Cup with a 2-0 win over Arsenal at Wembley, settled by a sharp second-half double from Nico O’Reilly.

O’Reilly struck first in the 61st minute, finishing neatly from Rayan Cherki’s assist to break a tight match. Four minutes later, he struck again, this time converting Matheus Nunes’ delivery to put City firmly in charge.

Arsenal, who had struggled to impose themselves throughout, offered little in response despite a flurry of substitutions from Mikel Arteta. Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus were introduced in a bid to spark a comeback, but Manchester City held firm.

Manchester City players lift the 2026 EFL Cup at Wembley Stadium after beating Arsenal on Sunday, March 22, 2026.

At the break, the sides were level at 0-0, with a few clear chances. Arsenal had more shots on target, but City dominated possession and dictated the tempo. That control eventually paid off.

Discipline proved an issue for Arsenal. Piero Hincapié and Ben White were both booked, while goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga also saw yellow early in the second half. On the other hand, City kept their composure, with only Abdukodir Khusanov cautioned.

Speaking after the game, match-winner O’Reilly said: “Unbelievable feeling. To win a final, we know we have to beat this team, which we recognise as being exceptionally good. We need to build on it, it will give us good momentum. Buzzing with today.

“A bit of disbelief seeing all the fans cheering like that when I scored those goals. Really a good feeling and a great birthday weekend.”

The victory seals Manchester City’s ninth EFL Cup title and adds fresh momentum to their 2025-2026 season campaign. As for Arsenal, they are now left to contend for the Premier League title, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League this season.
