Nathan Tella Signs New Leverkusen Deal, Lookman Eyes Role Shift At Atletico Madrid

Nigeria winger Nathan Tella has committed his future to Bayer Leverkusen after signing a contract extension that will keep him at the club until June 2031.

The new deal replaces his previous agreement, which was due to expire in 2028, demonstrating Leverkusen’s long-term faith in the 26-year-old.

Tella joined the Bundesliga side from Southampton in 2023 and made an immediate impact, helping the club secure a domestic double in his debut campaign in Germany.

Despite that early success, the forward has endured a stop-start season due to injury setbacks.

Elsewhere, Ademola Lookman could be set for a positional change at Atletico Madrid following reports that Antoine Griezmann is close to completing a move to Orlando City.

Griezmann’s expected departure would bring the curtain down on a 20-year career in European football and prompt a tactical rethink from manager Diego Simeone.

Lookman has largely been used as a wide midfielder in Simeone’s rigid 4-4-2 system, a role that maximises his pace but demands significant defensive work.

However, the Nigerian thrived in a more advanced role during his time at Atalanta, operating as an inverted winger or second striker.

With Griezmann set to leave, Lookman could now be pushed further up the pitch, potentially forming part of a two-man attack and playing closer to goal.
