President John Dramani Mahama is expected to lead Ghana’s delegation to the United Nations for a high-level engagement on reparatory justice and the remembrance of victims of the transatlantic slave trade.
The visit, which will take him to New York and Pennsylvania in the United States, will include participation in a High-Level Special Event on Reparatory Justice at the UN Headquarters.
The programme will bring together world leaders and dignitaries to deliberate on historical injustices associated with the transatlantic slave trade.
President Mahama is also scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly as part of activities marking the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
At the session, he is expected to present Ghana’s position, aligned with that of the African Union, advocating recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as one of the gravest crimes against humanity.
As part of the visit, the President will lay a wreath at the African Burial Ground Memorial in New York.
He is also expected to engage with academic institutions and members of the Ghanaian community, including a visit to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.
