President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, popularly known as Baba Jamal, following allegations of voter inducement during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
In a statement issued by the Presidency Communications on Saturday day, February 7, 2026, the President directed the Minister for Foreign Affairs to effect the recall without delay, citing concerns over standards of conduct expected of public officers.
Baba Jamal, who was serving as Ghana’s High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, participated as a candidate in the NDC primaries held on the same day. Allegations of vote-buying reportedly emerged during the exercise.
According to the Presidency, while allegations of voter inducement were made against multiple contestants in the primaries, Baba Jamal was the only serving public officer among the candidates, a factor that significantly influenced the President’s decision.
“The President noted that although allegations of vote-buying were made against multiple candidates who contested the primaries, Baba Jamal was the only serving public officer among them,” the statement said.
The President also took note of a public statement by the General Secretary of the NDC, indicating that the party has commenced its own internal investigations into the allegations arising from the primaries.
Despite the ongoing party processes, the Presidency emphasised that the recall was necessary to safeguard the integrity of public office and to avoid any perception of impropriety or conflict with the Government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.
“Without prejudice to the ongoing internal party processes, and strictly in view of the standards of conduct expected of public officers, the President considers it necessary to act decisively to preserve the integrity of public office,” the statement added.
The recall takes effect immediately, with the Minister for Foreign Affairs instructed to take all necessary administrative and diplomatic steps to give full effect to the directive.
The statement was signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accountability and ethical governance.
