Kwa-Thema – Seipati ‘Mama Action’ Dhludhlu and her fitness group, Ama-Gabhadiya, donated 40 school shoes and over 20 dignity towels at Kenneth Masekela Secondary School on May 19.
This was the group’s third annual donation to the school. The group uses the school premises weekly for their aerobics sessions.
As a way of appreciating the school, the group donates to support learners who are less fortunate.
“Many come to school with torn shoes; they face a lot of bullying due to their differences,” explained Dhludhlu.
She mentioned that these donations will boost the learners’ confidence and will encourage them to work hard at school.
“This will encourage them to come to school and stay focused. I am happy that our contributions will help someone else gain confidence.
“From her, I am to combine all Kwatsaduza schools in the fight against gangsterism, bullying and other issues,” she added.
Dhludhlu cited that bullying and drugs are ongoing issues in schools. She mentioned that she wants to work towards tackling those issues through a joint collaboration with schools within Kwa-Thema.
Her objective is to host a march against bullying and drugs in Kwa-Thema in June.
“I want to host this march in Youth Month to encourage learners to love one another, respect each other, avoid the use of drugs and to combat bullying.
“Learners from different schools fight one another, which is something we need to advocate against. Some end up killing one another,” she added.
Dhludhlu calls out to activists, business and organisation owners to help her make her march a meaningful contribution to society.
She urged those with learning or learnership opportunities and initiatives to also reach out and help where they can.
The school principal, Glory Jiyane, said many of their learners come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Jiyane noted that 800 learners at their school need school uniforms, basic toiletries, and proper school shoes.
She explained that the school is classified as a no-fee-paying institution and relies heavily on the support of sponsors and stakeholders.
“One of the key challenges that we have identified is the lack of basic necessities with school uniforms being one of them.
“School uniforms bring dignity. It helps a child walk into a classroom with pride and confidence,” she added.
Jiyane thanked Ama-Gabhadiya for working hand in hand with the school each year.
