Hilton Eyes Doubling Its African Hotel Portfolio with Bold Expansion Plans

Hilton is accelerating its growth across Africa with a strategic plan to double its hotel portfolio on the continent. The hospitality giant currently operates over 120 properties and has several more in the development pipeline. Hilton aims to introduce new brands and enhance its presence in key markets like Morocco, Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Africa.

Speaking with African Business, Andreas Lackner, Hilton’s VP of operations for Africa and the Indian Ocean, emphasized that Hilton’s growth strategy is built on leveraging the region’s increasing demand for diverse travel options, while also driving local job creation and sustainable tourism practices.

Hilton’s presence in Africa is already noteworthy, with seven properties in Morocco alone and an additional 10 in the pipeline. The group is also bringing iconic brands to the region, including the Waldorf Astoria and Canopy by Hilton. Notably, in the Seychelles, Hilton has introduced the first-ever Canopy by Hilton resort globally.

The company’s vision goes beyond luxury hotels, with mid-market offerings like the Hampton by Hilton brand entering new markets. This year marks the debut of DoubleTree by Hilton at Addis Ababa Airport in Ethiopia, and Hampton by Hilton in Sandton, South Africa, reflecting the company’s diversified growth across the continent.

Hilton’s resort portfolio has also seen substantial investments, with renovations at Hilton Mauritius Resort and Spa, offering guests modernized accommodations and amenities. According to Lackner, Hilton’s long-term ambition is to serve travelers wherever they go while positively impacting local economies by creating jobs, educating workers, and embedding sustainability in operations.

As Hilton continues to expand, the company plans to capitalize on emerging opportunities in both luxury and mid-market segments while tailoring its services to meet the unique needs of African markets. With initiatives to foster responsible tourism and partnerships with investors, Hilton aims to leave a lasting mark on Africa’s evolving hospitality landscape.
