Health Ministry orders tighter security at facilities after Mamprobi baby theft

The Ministry of Health has directed all health facilities across the country to strengthen security following the recent baby theft incident at Mamprobi Polyclinic.

The incident, which sparked widespread public concern, occurred on 17 February 2026 when a woman disguised in a nurse’s uniform allegedly took a four‑day‑old baby from the postnatal ward shortly after the child’s mother delivered by caesarean section. CCTV footage circulating on social media showed the suspect carrying the infant and leaving the facility, triggering an urgent police search.

Police later arrested a 33‑year‑old woman, Latifa Salifu, in connection with the case. She was found at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital with the child, who was subsequently identified by the mother through a birthmark. The baby was safely recovered and returned to hospital care for medical assessment.

In a statement issued on 18 February 2026, the Ministry commended the quick response of the Ghana Police Service, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and other stakeholders, including the whistleblower, for helping address the incident.

The Health Minister has instructed the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service to enforce strict day and night security measures at all facilities. Administrators are required to review and improve internal security protocols immediately.

The Minister also reiterated that all health facilities must have functional CCTV systems in place to monitor activities within their premises.

The Ministry reassured the public that the government remains committed to safeguarding patients and ensuring accountability in the health sector. Authorities are calling for calm as investigations into the incident continue.
