Members of Gospel Light International Church at its Dakuman branch in Accra held a vibrant traditional-themed service to commemorate Ghana Independence Day and the country’s Heritage Month celebration.
The special service, organised at the church’s Power House Cathedral on Sunday, 8 March 2026, brought together congregants dressed in diverse traditional attire from different regions of Ghana, reflecting the nation’s cultural diversity.
The Head Pastor of the branch, Nana Yiadom-Boakye, used the occasion to encourage unity among Ghanaians despite ethnic and cultural differences. According to him, the country’s diversity should be embraced as a source of strength rather than division.
He urged church members to appreciate and celebrate their heritage while remaining united in faith and national identity.

The event featured a variety of cultural displays including traditional music and dance performances representing several regions of the country. Members also showcased distinctive cultural attire, highlighting Ghana’s rich traditions and identity.
An exhibition organised by the Art Centre of Ghana displayed traditional fashion pieces and textiles, attracting strong interest from congregants, many of whom purchased locally made fabrics and clothing.

As part of the educational segment of the programme, participants were taken through presentations on traditional foods, languages and historical backgrounds of various ethnic groups, including communities from the Upper East Region.
Officials from the Ghana Tourism Authority, led by Stanley Ati, also engaged members on Ghana’s tourism and cultural heritage. They introduced participants to traditional dances, foods and historical narratives from the Greater Accra Region and the Volta Region as well as the Oti Region.

A cultural troupe known as the Frafra Heritage Crew represented traditions from northern Ghana, particularly the Upper West Region, performing traditional dances while showcasing local attire such as the Frafra fugu and indigenous cuisine.
Mr Ati also joined congregants on stage during some of the dance performances, adding to the lively atmosphere of the celebration.

At the end of the event, the church recognised two members, Eric Forson and Joyce Appah, as the overall best-dressed participants for the Traditional Sunday celebration.
The celebration forms part of activities marking Ghana’s Heritage Month, which is observed under the theme “Experience Ghana: My Heritage, My Pride”, an initiative aimed at promoting cultural preservation, tourism and national pride.
