The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has kicked off a high-level, weeklong technical engagement with Brazil’s national oil company, Petrobras, aimed at strengthening upstream cooperation and deepening bilateral ties. The sessions run from January 19 to 23, 2026.
The programme began at GNPC’s Research & Technology Centre (RTC) in Accra, where the Petrobras delegation was received by GNPC Acting CEO, Kwame Ntow Amoah, alongside senior management and technical leaders.
Welcoming the guests, Mr. Amoah described the engagement as a timely revitalisation of a long-standing relationship, noting Petrobras’ support in GNPC’s early institutional development.
“This visit builds on a relationship that spans several decades,” he said. “From GNPC’s formative years, Petrobras contributed to capacity-building and strategic planning. Today’s engagement reflects our commitment to practical collaboration on shared priorities.”

The collaboration is anchored in a recently signed Confidentiality Agreement, which provides a formal framework for technical data sharing and joint research.
Deputy CEO (Technical), Michael Aryeetey, outlined GNPC’s national petroleum strategy, emphasising measures to reverse production declines, optimise output from existing assets and marginal fields, and strengthen internal operatorship. He stated that Petrobras’ expertise could play a transformative role in Ghana’s frontier exploration, particularly in the Voltaian Basin, where complex geology presents both challenges and opportunities.

Representing Petrobras, Rafael Pinto de Freitas, Upstream JV Development Engineer, described the visit as “exploratory and learning-focused,” aimed at identifying areas of mutual benefit and building a foundation for long-term collaboration.
Throughout the week, the Petrobras team will engage in data room sessions, technical reviews, and interactive workshops, reinforcing GNPC’s strategy to partner with global national oil companies to enhance knowledge transfer, build local technical capacity, and maximise value in Ghana’s petroleum sector.
