The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has rejected claims that its vessel monitoring system is ineffective and that vessels operating within Ghana’s waters are not being monitored.
The Authority said its maritime surveillance system remains operational and enables it to monitor vessels within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction.
The GMA was responding to comments attributed to Dennis Miracles Aboagye on TV3’s Daily Brief and Joy FM’s Newsnite programmes on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 23, the Authority described the claims as false and misleading, saying they did not reflect the current state of maritime surveillance in Ghana.
According to the GMA, it uses maritime domain awareness tools to maintain 24-hour surveillance of vessels operating within Ghana’s maritime domain.
It said the system is also used to monitor and protect offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines and submarine cables.
The Authority said its standard operating procedures include tracking vessels, verifying their identities and checking compliance with applicable requirements to support safety, security and environmental protection.
It therefore rejected the suggestion that vessels operating in Ghana’s waters are not monitored.
The GMA said it remained committed to continuous surveillance and the protection of Ghana’s maritime interests, urging the public to rely on its official communications on matters concerning maritime surveillance.
