Ghana Tourism Authority assures visitors of safety amid police extortion probe

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has issued a statement addressing a viral social media video in which some visiting Black Americans allege they were kidnapped and extorted by individuals purporting to be police officers.

In a press release issued on Monday, 8 December, and signed by Bright Asempa Tsadidey, Director of Corporate Affairs, on behalf of the chief executive officer , the GTA confirms that the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority have launched full investigations into the matter.

The authority says the agencies are handling the issue with “the urgency and seriousness it deserves,” and the public will be updated upon conclusion of their work.

The statement comes as Ghana welcomes thousands of visitors for the annual “December in GH” festivities. The GTA sought to reassure all travellers, stating that the country “remains a safe and trusted destination.”

“Our security systems—supported by national law enforcement and tourism sector partners—have been reinforced to guarantee the safety, comfort and peace of mind of all visitors throughout the festive season,” the authority said.

The GTA urged the public to remain calm and allow the security agencies to complete their work. It provided contact numbers for visitors requiring assistance: 0579579019, 030 700 7100, or via WhatsApp on 0546352240.

“Ghana remains open, secure, and welcoming. Visitors should have full confidence in their safety,” the statement concluded.
