Ghana, South Korea launch five-year plan to protect heritage sites from climate change

Ghana and South Korea are set to deepen cooperation on protecting Ghana’s cultural and natural heritage from the growing effects of climate change under a new five-year initiative.

The Korea-Ghana Heritage Project, which will run from 2026 to 2030, is aimed at strengthening Ghana’s capacity to assess and respond to climate-related threats to heritage sites.

Secretary-General of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, Dr Hyunik Hong, led a delegation to present the project to Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and the Ghana Commission for UNESCO.

The project, themed “Empowering Climate Action, Strengthening Ghana’s Integrated Capacity for Climate Change Response in Heritage Conservation,” will focus on building Ghana’s institutional capacity to incorporate climate resilience into heritage conservation.

The engagement also allowed the Korean delegation, the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Commission for UNESCO to discuss areas of collaboration towards protecting heritage sites from the impact of climate change.

The initiative forms part of the longstanding cooperation between Ghana and the Republic of Korea in education, culture and sustainable development.

It is expected to support efforts to ensure that Ghana’s cultural and natural heritage is better prepared to withstand climate-related risks while strengthening local capacity for long-term conservation.
