Ghana protests attack on its UN peacekeepers in Lebanon

The Government of Ghana has formally lodged a protest with the United Nations following what it describes as a “condemnable attack” on Ghanaian soldiers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, 7 March 2026, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that the government had submitted a formal protest to the UN after the incident left two Ghanaian soldiers seriously injured.

According to the ministry, the attack occurred on 6 March 2026 against the Ghanaian Battalion deployed under the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon.

In a protest letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, the Government of Ghana demanded a full, immediate, impartial and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack on personnel serving in the interest of international peace and security.

“The Government of Ghana strongly condemns this attack and demands that those responsible be identified and held accountable,” the ministry stated.

The statement emphasised that the assault constitutes a grave violation of international law, describing it as an act that could amount to a war crime and an affront to the protections afforded to United Nations peacekeeping personnel.

Ghana also urged the United Nations to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of members of the Ghanaian contingent serving under UNIFIL, as well as all personnel deployed on the mission.

The government further assured the injured soldiers and their families that every effort would be made to pursue justice and strengthen protective measures for peacekeeping personnel.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and their loved ones,” the statement said.

The government reaffirmed Ghana’s long-standing commitment to United Nations peacekeeping operations, stressing that the safety and protection of peacekeepers must remain paramount in global efforts to maintain international peace and security.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry added that it will continue to closely monitor developments and remain engaged with relevant UN authorities regarding the incident.
