Ghana launches AI health project to strengthen digital healthcare and human security

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ghana and the World Health Organization (WHO) Ghana have held the inaugural Project Steering Committee meeting for an initiative aimed at using artificial intelligence to improve health outcomes while addressing potential risks to human security.

The project, titled “Harnessing AI to Improve Health Outcomes in Ghana while Addressing its Potential Risks to Human Security,” brings together government institutions, development partners, academia and civil society.

The meeting provided strategic guidance and oversight for the implementation of the initiative, with discussions focusing on key areas of Ghana’s digital health transformation.

Participants examined measures to strengthen AI governance and data security, build institutional and health workforce capacity, and promote digital inclusion.

The meeting also explored the use of AI-enabled early warning systems to help identify and respond to climate-sensitive diseases.

The initiative is being implemented with support from the Government of Japan and the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security.

UNDP Ghana and WHO Ghana said the project places people at the centre of Ghana’s adoption of digital health technologies, with emphasis on ensuring that innovation is safe, ethical, equitable and aligned with the country’s health priorities.

The initiative forms part of efforts to harness emerging technologies to strengthen Ghana’s health systems while identifying and managing the risks associated with the increasing use of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
