Ghana Airports Authority to ‘name and shame’ staff involved in airport extortion

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and airport stakeholders have announced measures to tackle extortion and begging at all airports operated by the company, including a “name and shame” approach for individuals found culpable.

The decision was reached at a high-level stakeholder facilitation meeting held on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, to address concerns over unacceptable practices involving personnel operating within airport terminals.

As part of the measures, authorities will introduce a “mystery shopping” initiative to identify individuals engaging in extortionary conduct.

According to GACL, persons found responsible will be publicly identified through appropriate media channels as part of efforts to discourage the practice and promote accountability.

Staff found culpable will also face disciplinary action and will no longer be permitted to work at any airport or within airport environs.

Management has established a dedicated hotline — 0542175636 — through which passengers can report alleged cases of extortion involving personnel from agencies and service providers operating at the terminals.

Passengers making reports have been advised to provide key details, including the date and time of the incident, the name of the officer involved, the agency concerned, and the location where the incident occurred.

GACL also reminded travellers that they have the right to request the Airport Identification Card of any person claiming to represent an agency at the airport to verify their identity.

Passengers have further been encouraged to obtain receipts for any payments made at airport facilities and report any suspicious demands through the designated hotline.

The company said the collaboration with airport stakeholders is aimed at protecting the reputation of Ghana’s airports and supporting the country’s ambition of becoming a preferred aviation hub and leader in airport business in West Africa.

The initiative involves several airport agencies and service providers, including the Ghana Immigration Service, National Security, Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division), Ghana Police Service, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Port Health, private security companies, airlines, ground handling companies and concessionaires operating at the airports.
