GACL to begin Clconstruction of Upper East Airport in Bolgatanga

The long-awaited construction of an airport in the Upper East Region is set to commence shortly, following a detailed inspection of a 4,362-acre site in Bolgatanga by the Board and Management of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

The site visit was part of a working tour of regional airports under GACL’s management, led by Board Chairman James Agalga and Managing Director Yvonne Opare.

The exercise aimed to provide the leadership with firsthand insight into the operational and developmental needs of airports across the country.

The tour commenced at Tamale International Airport, where the delegation engaged with staff and examined critical operational and technical facilities. From there, the team proceeded to Bolgatanga to evaluate the land earmarked for the Upper East Airport project.

In Bolgatanga, the GACL team was joined by Upper East Regional Minister Akamugri Donatus Atanga, Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Rev Stephen Wilfred Arthur, and technical experts from the Authority.

The officials met with traditional leaders, landowners, and local stakeholders, reaffirming the government’s commitment to delivering the project.

“The Upper East Airport is a direct fulfilment of the President’s pledge to provide the region with its own aviation facility,” the officials stated.

They added that most technical preparations are complete, and final requirements are being addressed to ensure smooth commencement of construction.

Upon completion, the Bolgatanga airport is expected to accelerate economic growth, enhance regional connectivity, and strengthen emergency and security operations, marking a significant milestone in the Upper East Region’s development trajectory.
