FIFA U17 WWC qualifiers: Senegal hold Black Maidens in Dakar
The Black Maidens of Ghana have been held to a 1-1 draw by Senegal in the first leg of the final round of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers in Dakar.
The hosts raced into an early lead after Mariama Faty opened the scoring in the 21st minute, but Ghana responded through Benedicta Danso in the second half.
The hosts, who are chasing a maiden qualification to the U17 WWC, got off to a bright start, pushing Ghana back with waves of attack. The spell of dominace counted as Senegal were awarded a penalty after 20 minutes, Faty elected herself for the spot kick and made no mistake.
The Black Maidens began to pick up after Senegal took their foot off the pedal, creating decent chances before the break.
After the break, coach Joe Nana Adarkwah rang in some changes, bringing on Rafia Osman and Linda Achiaa for Cynthia Obinsrewu and Mabel Doe Martey respectively.
The substitutions gave Ghana the edge as the Black Maidens seized control and looked dangerous on counter attack.
With 15 minutes remaining, Danso replaced Zeinab Shani and with four minutes left, the substitute fired home the equalizer.
Senegal will travel to Ghana next week for the second leg on July 11, with the winner on aggregate advancing to the World Cup.
