The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has opened a consultative workshop in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, aimed at developing recommendations to strengthen governance and improve the performance of the air transport industry across West Africa.
The meeting, which began on 4 March 2026, has brought together aviation stakeholders from across the region to deliberate on issues including competition within the air transport market, consumer protection and mechanisms for resolving disputes in the aviation sector.
The discussions are expected to produce practical proposals that will enhance efficiency and competitiveness within the regional aviation industry.
Opening the workshop, the Director of Transport at the ECOWAS Commission, Chris Appiah, said the gathering represents an important step in the efforts of member states to strengthen and reform the region’s air transport sector.
Appiah delivered the remarks on behalf of the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray.
He also recalled the commitment made by ECOWAS member states under Article 32 of the revised ECOWAS Treaty of 1993 to establish a coordinated policy framework aimed at promoting regional integration in transport and communications.

The workshop forms part of ongoing efforts by ECOWAS to support the development of a more integrated and efficient air transport system across the West African region. ️
