Ramos Olukayode, Managing Director of Mosra Energy, has said that the estimated 200 million tonnes of coal reserves in Obomkpa, Ugbodu and Ukwu-Nzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State exceed the known deposits in Enugu and Kogi States, positioning Delta as emerging hub for energy production and industrial development.

He, therefore, revealed plans to establish a 600-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Obomkpa, Aniocha North LGA Delta State, saying the company had already secured over 200 hectares of land for the proposed power project, which is expected to provide reliable electricity for industries, stimulate economic activities and serve as the nucleus of a new industrial hub in the area.

Olukayode made the revelation, on Tuesday, during the Energy Ecosystem Panel Discussion on the Day 2 of the Delta State 2026 Economic and Investment Summit 2026 in Asaba.

He said that the vast coal deposits as a strategic asset capable of driving Delta State’s industrialisation agenda.

“The abundant resource provides a solid foundation for large-scale power generation, manufacturing and other industrial activities that would accelerate economic diversification, create employment opportunities and attract both local and foreign investments.

“The coal deposits in Obomkpa, Ugbodu and Ukwu-Nzu represent a major competitive advantage for Delta State.

“They are not only significant in quantity but also possess enormous economic value that can support the state’s industrialisation agenda,” he said.

Beyond the coal reserves, the Mosra Energy boss stated that Obomkpa and its surrounding communities also possess substantial deposits of kaolin and clay, which could support the establishment of ceramic, cement and other manufacturing industries within the proposed industrial hub.

He said the combination of coal, kaolin and clay resources presents a unique opportunity for integrated industrial development capable of positioning Delta State as one of Nigeria’s leading manufacturing destinations.

Olukayode encouraged the Delta State Government and private investors to leverage the State’s abundant solid mineral resources to reduce dependence on crude oil revenue and unlock new opportunities for sustainable economic growth.

Stakeholders had identified energy, agriculture, mining, blue economy, transport infrastructure, digital innovation and legal reforms as strategic sectors for attracting sustainable investments into the state.

Similarly, Delta State unveiled a roadmap to unlock its nearly 3,000 megawatts of installed electricity generation capacity, with plans to establish a Delta State Electricity Regulatory Commission and a Delta State Rural Electrification Agency, as major investors in the power sector pledged support for the state’s electricity market.

Unveiling the roadmap at the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit, Uche Okafor, Consultant to the Delta State Government on Electricity Market Development, said the State’s Electricity Sector Law had created the legal foundation for private investment.

“All these things we have discussed need a platform for regulation”, she said, adding that the Delta State Electricity Sector Law provides the platform to build an electricity market that serves industries, investors and consumers.

“One of the immediate steps after this summit is the establishment of the Delta State Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Delta State Rural Electrification Agency. The commission will ensure investors get their returns, protect consumers from exploitation and provide the framework for investments to thrive”, Okafor noted.
