Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has officially declared his intention to contest for the National Chairman position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a statement dated February 4, 2026, Wontumi cited the challenges faced by the party and described his decision as a call to strengthen, unify, and rebuild the NPP.
“I do so not for personal ambition, but to strengthen, rebuild, and unify our great party,” he said, emphasising his commitment to service and grassroots leadership.
Wontumi described himself as “grassroots personified” and said his decision followed consultations with “my maker, the counsel of elders of my party, and the youth.” He stressed that leadership now requires “vision, courage, and unwavering determination” and the willingness to make difficult decisions “for the NPP.”
He added: “We are ready. We are organized. We are built for the battle ahead. Together, we will restore confidence, empower our grassroots, and position the NPP to win decisively in 2028.”
The announcement is expected to spark debate within the party, which is regrouping after the 2024 general elections. Wontumi commands strong support in the Ashanti Region, the party’s stronghold, but his appeal across other regions and factions remains to be tested.
Political analysts suggest that his campaign will focus on party unity, grassroots mobilisation, and structural rebuilding ahead of the 2028 elections.
The NPP’s race for national executive positions is anticipated to intensify in the coming months as preparations for the National Delegates Conference get underway.
