Brahim DÃaz breaks African World Cup assist record as Morocco crush Canada
Brahim DÃaz made history as Morocco defeated co-hosts Canada 3-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16. The Real Madrid playmaker provided two assists in Houston to take his tournament tally to four.
He now holds the all-time record for the most assists by an African player in the men’s FIFA World Cup. His outstanding creative display also helped the Atlas Lions become the first African nation to reach back-to-back World Cup quarter-finals.
The match remained goalless throughout the first half, with Morocco also suffering an early setback after Ismael Saibari was forced off injured. However, Walid Regragui’s side dominated after the restart, with DÃaz orchestrating the attack through his vision and passing.
Five minutes into the second half, Azzedine Ounahi broke the deadlock to put Morocco ahead. In the 82nd minute, DÃaz unlocked the Canadian defence with a perfectly weighted pass, allowing Ounahi to calmly slot home his second goal of the evening.
The playmaker was not finished. Deep into stoppage time, DÃaz collected his fourth assist of the tournament after threading a delicate pass into the path of substitute Soufiane Rahimi, who completed the 3-0 victory.
Canada, coached by Jesse Marsch, became the first co-host nation to exit the tournament, while Morocco sealed their place in the quarter-finals in commanding fashion.
DÃaz’s fourth assist marked a landmark achievement for African football. He surpassed the previous World Cup record of three assists jointly held by Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan and Morocco’s Tahar El-Khalej.
Remarkably, the 25-year-old reached the milestone in just his first five World Cup appearances.
He announced himself on the global stage by registering assists in consecutive group-stage matches against Brazil and Scotland. His remarkable debut campaign has lifted him to second in the tournament’s assist standings, behind only Michael Olise.
The former Manchester City and AC Milan midfielder committed his international future to Morocco in 2024 after representing Spain at youth level. Since inheriting the famous number 10 shirt, he has become the creative heartbeat of Walid Regragui’s side.
His latest performance follows an outstanding 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, where he finished as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, further cementing his status as Morocco’s attacking leader.
Morocco’s victory sets up a quarter-final clash at Gillette Stadium on July 9.
