Alex Soros explores support for ECOWAS integration under Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has held discussions with philanthropist and Open Society Foundation (OSF) Chairman Alex Soros on potential support for efforts to strengthen ECOWAS integration.

The meeting took place in New York on Sunday as President Mahama began his engagements on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

Mr Soros, an investor and philanthropist who has previously engaged with President Mahama, expressed interest in exploring partnerships with the regional bloc and supporting its integration efforts.

The discussions form part of President Mahama’s wider engagements at the UN General Assembly, with the focus on mobilising international partnerships around regional and continental priorities.

The meeting also preceded a planned presidential roundtable being coordinated by the Open Society Foundation with a select group of global foundation presidents and chief executive officers.

The roundtable is expected to bring together leaders from major philanthropic and corporate foundations, including the Gates Foundation, Ford Foundation, Open Society Foundations, Hewlett Packard, Hilton, Rockefeller Foundation, Humanity United, Anglo American, Chandler and UBS Optimus Foundation.

The engagement is expected to provide an opportunity for President Mahama to discuss areas where international foundations and development partners could support regional integration and other development priorities.
