Ablakwa to visit Latvia over death of Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Ahyia

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced an imminent visit to Latvia to engage authorities and investigators over the death of Ghanaian national, Nana Agyei Ahyia, as government intensifies efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The Foreign Affairs Minister disclosed that he has formally notified the Latvian government of his decision to travel to the Baltic state to hold high-level discussions with his counterpart and directly engage officials leading investigations into the case.

The ministerial delegation to Latvia will include representatives of the family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, in a move aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability and family participation in the pursuit of justice.

He further revealed that upon receipt of the final investigative findings from Latvian authorities, the Government of Ghana will engage independent experts to analyse all reports to guide the country’s next steps.

“Independent experts will be brought in to examine all investigative reports, particularly the expected final report from the Latvian authorities, to inform our actions in the interest of justice,” the Minister stated.

The Minister made these disclosures after meeting the family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier today.

According to Mr Ablakwa, he invited the family to the Ministry to personally convey his deepest condolences and to brief them on the diplomatic and investigative interventions undertaken by the Ministry since the incident occurred.

He explained that shortly after the tragic loss, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs promptly dispatched a fact-finding mission from Ghana’s Embassy in Germany, which holds concurrent accreditation to Latvia, to gather first-hand information on the case.

The mission has since submitted a preliminary report to the Ministry, providing an initial account of findings and engagements with Latvian authorities.

Mr Ablakwa also confirmed that Latvian officials have formally indicated that investigations into the circumstances leading to Nana Agyei Ahyia’s death are still ongoing and have not been concluded.

The Foreign Affairs Minister reiterated government’s firm commitment to ensuring that the truth is fully established and that justice is pursued without compromise.

He assured the family that they will remain fully informed at every stage of the process, as diplomatic engagements and investigations continue.

The case has sparked public concern and renewed calls for stronger protection of Ghanaians living and working abroad, a matter Mr Ablakwa has consistently emphasised as a key priority of his tenure at the Foreign Ministry.

Government, he stressed, will leave no stone unturned in seeking answers and accountability in the tragic death of Nana Agyei Ahyia.
