Bob Mackie, the legendary designer whose sequined, theatrical creations helped define American show-business glamour, died Sept. 14 at 87.

An official statement on his Instagram announcing his death stated:

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today. He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”

Mackie was known for the glamorous designs and styling many of Hollywood’s greatest, most notably collaborating with Cher.

Beyond the rhinestones and red-carpet spectacle is another important part of his legacy: Mackie’s decades-long creative relationships with some of the most influential Black entertainers in American culture.

Here are seven notable Black artists and groups whose careers intersected with Mackie’s extraordinary design work:

Diana Ross

Their partnership was among Mackie’s most significant. He designed for Ross and The Supremes and later created costumes for her solo career, including work connected to Lady Sings the Blues, which earned Mackie and Ray Aghayan an Oscar nomination. He was still designing for Ross decades later.

The Supremes

Mackie designed for the group during the 1969 television special G.I.T. on Broadway, helping translate their polished Motown image into television spectacle.

Tina Turner

Mackie’s daring designs matched Turner’s explosive stage presence, with high-impact silhouettes becoming part of her visual identity.

Their creative connection demonstrated how Mackie could amplify an artist’s persona without overshadowing it.

Whitney Houston

Mackie designed glamorous evening wear for Houston, adding his signature theatrical polish to one of the defining voices of her generation.

Oprah Winfrey

Winfrey was among the prominent entertainers Mackie dressed during his long career, further demonstrating his reach beyond traditional Hollywood costume design.

Lola Falana

The singer, dancer and actress was another Black entertainment star included among Mackie’s notable clients, reflecting his deep connection to performers whose careers demanded show-stopping fashion.
