Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Friday, joined the national clean-up exercise declared by President John Dramani Mahama as part of efforts to restore sanitation and reduce the risk of flooding in communities affected by recent heavy rains.
The two-day exercise, scheduled for Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11, was launched under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee and is being held under the theme, “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana After the Floods.”
It forms part of the government’s response to the devastating floods that recently affected seven regions across the country.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang joined security personnel, officials of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), sanitation workers and community members in clearing choked drains and removing refuse from public spaces.

Her participation underscored the government’s commitment to leading by example in promoting environmental sanitation and disaster prevention.
The presidency has directed all government appointees, including ministers, Members of Parliament, chief executives of public institutions and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), to actively participate in the exercise by working alongside residents in their respective communities.

The clean-up campaign focuses on desilting drains, clearing sand and debris from roads, cleaning markets, lorry parks, recreational areas and communal waste collection points to improve water flow ahead of the expected heavy rains. The initiative also seeks to encourage responsible waste disposal and strengthen public participation in maintaining clean and healthy communities.
The government has urged all Ghanaians to support the exercise, stressing that sustained environmental cleanliness is essential to preventing recurring floods, protecting lives and safeguarding property.
