Police seize gun, ammunition in Oti Region; two arrested

Police in the Oti Region have intercepted a vehicle transporting a firearm and a large quantity of ammunition, leading to the arrest of two suspects in the Krachi East Municipality.

The operation was carried out by officers from the Regional Police Intelligence Department (RPID) following actionable intelligence. The team, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Maxwell Osafo Adamu, stopped a Hyundai Kia Rhino truck with registration number GS-4677-17 at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, 2025.

Although the vehicle was ostensibly conveying building materials, a thorough search uncovered a locally manufactured single-barrel short gun and 21 boxes containing 525 rounds of Lion AAA and BB ammunition concealed among the cargo.

The suspects were identified as Abubakari Salam Atta, aged 35, and Kabuja Kwadwo Taademe, aged 19. During preliminary investigations, the two reportedly claimed they had been contracted by one Kabuja Ntesi to transport the consignment.

Police sources disclosed that the suspects allegedly attempted to bribe the arresting officers with GH¢50,000 in a bid to secure their release, an offer which was flatly rejected.

Both suspects have since been placed in custody and are assisting police with ongoing investigations aimed at identifying other persons connected to the consignment and the intended destination of the weapons.

The police described the interception as the result of coordinated efforts between the RPID and the Regional Crime Office, reaffirming their commitment to curbing the circulation of illegal firearms and ensuring public safety across the Oti Region.
