The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State recorded a boost to its grassroots mobilisation on Wednesday as more than 200 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP) defected to the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general election.
The defectors, led by John Ekpoma, formally joined the PDP at Abina Amegu in Ikwo Local Government Area during the declaration of Goodluck Chidiebere Egwu as the party’s candidate for the Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency.
Ekpoma said the new PDP members were prepared to deploy their grassroots networks to strengthen the party’s mobilisation at polling-unit and ward levels, ahead of the elections.
The development came as Egwu unveiled his agenda for the constituency, promising to pursue development-focused representation anchored on empowerment, infrastructure and human capital development if elected to the House of Representatives.
Egwu said representation should go beyond legislative presence, stressing that elected representatives must use their positions to attract projects, programmes, and economic opportunities that improve constituents’ welfare.
He pledged to collaborate with relevant stakeholders at the National Assembly, government agencies and other levels of government to attract development projects to Ikwo and Ezza South.
“We must continue to synergise, unite and reason together. There should be no separation and no division. All support groups must work with the party executives because we are working for one objective,” Egwu said.
He also urged PDP leaders, members and support groups to work through the recognised structures of the party, stressing the need for unity and coordinated grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 election.
