More than 100 tertiary institutions in Ghana had not obtained recognition from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) as of September 2026, the Commission has disclosed.
The institutions have been listed by GTEC as unrecognised, putting prospective students at risk of enrolling in institutions whose operations and qualifications have not been cleared through the Commission’s quality assurance processes.
GTEC is therefore urging students and parents to confirm the recognition status of tertiary institutions before making enrolment decisions.
The Commission also wants the public to verify the status of certificates issued by institutions on the list before presenting them for employment, further education or other purposes.
According to GTEC, checking an institution’s recognition status before enrolment can help prospective students avoid potential problems associated with qualifications obtained from unrecognised institutions.
It further advised individuals who already hold certificates from the affected institutions to conduct the necessary checks before relying on the qualifications.
The Commission’s warning forms part of its quality assurance efforts to ensure that tertiary education providers operating in Ghana meet the required standards.
