Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, Mannie Fresh is recalling what he described as “one of the craziest days of my life.”

The Cash Money legend was in New York City during the Cash Money/Ruff Ryders tour when the attacks happened.
Fresh said he had been leaving the studio in the early morning hours when he noticed something almost unimaginable in New York: there was no traffic on the streets. “You think it’s the end of the world,” Fresh recalled, saying he and his driver immediately knew something wasn’t right.
When Fresh made it back to his hotel, he said the scene had turned to chaos as people tried to understand what was happening. He recalled screaming, arguments and racial tension before watching the second plane strike the World Trade Center. “I had that moment of, we are at war,” Fresh said. By the following day, he described New York as looking like “a zombie movie,” with little traffic, disrupted phone service and people walking through the city carrying backpacks and bottles of water.
Fresh said the group remained stuck in the area for several days with virtually no way to communicate with their loved ones back home. With flights and transportation suspended, their families feared the worst while the artists had no way to let them know they were safe. Fresh said a bus driver who knew New York eventually found a back way out of the city about five days later. Looking back on the experience, he said it was surreal to witness something that previously seemed possible only in a movie actually happen in real life.
