IGP decorates officer promoted for saving lives during Aboso fire

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has decorated Chief Inspector Hance Atubra following his promotion for rescuing people during the deadly fire outbreak at Aboso in the Western Region.

Chief Inspector Atubra, formerly an Inspector at the Tarkwa Divisional Headquarters, was formally decorated with his new rank at the National Police Headquarters in Accra on Monday, August 31, 2026.

His promotion was in recognition of his bravery and exceptional intervention during the August 26 fire at the Aboso Main Lorry Station, where several shops were engulfed in flames.

Atubra was reportedly the first police officer to arrive at the scene and immediately moved to assist people trapped in the affected area, helping to evacuate them to safety as the fire spread.

His actions attracted commendation from witnesses at the scene and subsequently led to a recommendation for his promotion.

Decorating him with his new rank, the IGP commended Atubra for his courage, swift response and dedication to duty.

He said the officer’s actions reflected the professionalism and commitment to protecting lives and property expected of members of the Ghana Police Service.

The Police Administration has described the promotion as recognition of exceptional courage and dedication to duty, while encouraging other officers to demonstrate the same commitment in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The August 26 fire at the Aboso Main Lorry Station caused significant damage to property, with several shops affected.

Chief Inspector Atubra’s intervention has since drawn public attention to the role of police officers as first responders during emergencies, particularly when lives are at immediate risk.
