Shell reinforces safety commitment at CEO contractors forum

Shell Petroleum Development Company reinforced its commitment to safe operations across Nigeria on Tuesday, gathering chief executives of its contracting partners for the company’s annual Leadership and Contractor CEO Conference in Lagos.

The event, themed “Learn. Adapt. Improve.,” is designed to underscore what organisers called a shared commitment to people, performance and safety.

Elohor Aiboni, Executive Vice President and Country Chair Nigeria, told attendees that Shell is executing a broad portfolio of projects to meet the country’s growing energy needs and support national development. Despite the scale of that work, she said, safety remains the primary measure of success.

“No matter how significant the opportunity, no matter how important the project, our success will always be measured first by how safely we deliver it,” Aiboni said. “That is why this conference matters.”

The conference included technical sessions, an exhibition, and awards recognising top safety performers among contractor firms. Its centerpiece was the signing of a Leadership Charter, developed in 2025 through a joint effort between Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo) and its contractor partners.

SNEPCo Managing Director Ronald Adams linked this year’s theme directly to the charter’s intent. “To learn, we must be honest about what has worked, what has been difficult, and what our people and operations are telling us,” he said, adding that the charter’s commitments must move beyond conference discussions and become embedded in daily leadership, engagement and performance review.

Aiboni closed by restating the stakes underlying the day’s proceedings.

“Every person who works for Shell or on behalf of Shell deserves to return home safely to their family, every day, without exception,” she said.

Shell has operated in Nigeria for decades and works with a wide network of contracting firms across its upstream and downstream businesses.
