The Tabora Mantse, Nii Klortia Ayikwei Tutu Alanmle I, has launched a Homowo Football Gala as part of activities marking this year’s Homowo Festival celebrations, with the aim of discovering grassroots football talent, empowering the youth and promoting peace, unity and community development.
The tournament, which features 16 community teams attracted hundreds of young people, football enthusiasts, chiefs, opinion leaders and invited guests to the Rasta Park at New Achimota, where the opening match between Mikesh Global FC and Hollywood FC thrilled spectators with exciting displays of skill, determination and sportsmanship.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, the Tabora Mantse, Nii Klortia Ayikwei Tutu Alanmle I, said community development remained one of the foremost responsibilities of chiefs and traditional leaders, particularly in creating opportunities that empower young people and improve their livelihoods.
He explained that the Homowo Football Gala was introduced to strengthen the relationship between the youth, the traditional leadership and opinion leaders in the community, while providing a platform for young footballers to discover, develop and showcase their God-given talents.
According to him, although the tournament offers attractive prizes, its primary objective is to create opportunities for talented players to progress into professional football.
He disclosed that football scouts had been invited to monitor the matches and identify outstanding players for possible recruitment by clubs in the Ghana Premier League and other Ghanaian football teams.
The chief stressed that the competition forms part of broader efforts by the traditional leadership to promote community development by exposing the hidden talents of the youth and giving them the opportunity to excel in football.
The Tabora Dzasetse, Nii Amartey Ajaa I, described the football gala as an investment in the future of the youth, noting that many young people possess enormous talent but often lack the exposure and support needed to realise their full potential.
He said the initiative was helping to bring young people together, nurture their abilities and create opportunities capable of transforming their lives.
Nii Amartey Ajaa I expressed the hope that similar programmes would continue to be organised to enable more young people to develop and showcase their talents.
He further observed that many young people become vulnerable to social vices when they are left idle, stressing that sports provide a constructive avenue for them to channel their energy into productive activities.
According to him, identifying gifted footballers and supporting them to advance their careers would prevent many from becoming unemployed or falling under negative influences.

“Our goal is to support these young people, build their confidence and provide them with opportunities to promote themselves. As stakeholders, we are committed to helping them develop their talents and improve their future prospects,” he stated.
The Tabora Manye, Naa Amerley Afoto, also commended the initiative, describing it as a worthwhile programme that unites the youth, nurtures their talents and creates brighter opportunities for their future.
She expressed the hope that more youth-centred programmes would be organised in the community to help develop and expose the God-given abilities of young people.
She further reaffirmed the traditional leadership’s commitment to the development of Tabora through initiatives that would create business opportunities and strengthen relationships among members of the community.
In the opening fixture of the tournament, Mikesh Global FC defeated Hollywood FC 3-1 in an entertaining contest to secure the first victory of the competition.
At the end of the tournament, the champions will receive a cash prize of GH¢10,000 and a trophy, while the first runners-up will take home GH¢6,000. The remaining participating teams will also receive cash rewards in recognition of their participation and performance.
