Ghana has commemorated the 2026 Emancipation Day with a call for Africans and members of the Diaspora to honour the sacrifices of their ancestors by building a continent anchored in freedom, justice, dignity and unity.

The commemoration, held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra, formed part of a Tribute to Ancestors wreath-laying ceremony organised across key heritage sites, including the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre, the George Padmore Library and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, said Emancipation Day should be viewed as more than a remembrance of the abolition of slavery, but as a continuing journey towards dignity, justice, identity and unity.

She said the commemoration provided an opportunity to honour the resilience of ancestors who endured oppression while reflecting on the responsibility of the present generation to protect the values of freedom and human dignity.

“Emancipation is more than the end of physical bondage. It is a continuing journey toward dignity, justice, identity and unity,” Houadjeto said.

She added that the struggle against oppression should inspire current generations to ensure that new forms of hatred, intolerance, exclusion and division do not undermine the progress made towards freedom.

Speaking from the final resting place of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Houadjeto recalled his vision of a united Africa whose destiny was inseparable from that of people of African descent across the world.

She quoted Dr. Nkrumah’s famous declaration that, “The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of the African continent,” stressing that the statement remained relevant in the present day.

According to her, political liberation must now be accompanied by efforts to overcome prejudice, discrimination and intolerance while strengthening the bonds between Africa and its global Diaspora.

Houadjeto said Ghana’s efforts to connect Africans across the world to their shared heritage continued through initiatives such as the Year of Return, Beyond the Return and the Black Star Experience.

She said the initiatives reflected Ghana’s commitment to providing opportunities for members of the global African family to reconnect with their heritage, rediscover their roots and reclaim their place in the African story.

The GTA Chief Executive Officer also urged Africans to remember the unnamed victims and survivors of slavery whose stories may not have been recorded in history books but whose resilience contributed to the preservation of humanity.

She said the greatest tribute to the ancestors would not be found solely in speeches and ceremonies, but in the kind of Africa that present generations choose to build.

“Let us build an Africa united in purpose, prosperous through cooperation and bound together by mutual respect and shared humanity,” she said.

The commemoration brought together government officials, traditional authorities, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Panafest Foundation, members of the media and members of the African Diaspora.

Houadjeto said the Ghana Tourism Authority would continue to preserve and promote heritage sites, stories and experiences that connect Africans everywhere to their shared history.

She called on Africans to deepen the bonds between the continent and its Diaspora while working towards the united Africa envisioned by the continent’s founding leaders.

The 2026 Emancipation Day commemoration therefore served not only as a moment to remember the past, but also as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect freedom, promote human dignity and build a more united African future.
