ECOWAS studies Ghana’s fuel quality system to strengthen regional standards

A delegation from the ECOWAS Commission is in Ghana to understake the National Petroleum Authority’s (NPA) regulatory framework as part of efforts to strengthen fuel quality standards across the sub-region.

The team, made up of regulators and officials responsible for downstream petroleum sectors in ECOWAS member states, is on a three-day study tour to examine Ghana’s approach to regulating the downstream petroleum industry.

The visit is expected to provide a platform for member states to exchange experiences, share best practices and deepen cooperation on the implementation of harmonised fuel quality standards across West Africa.

Welcoming the delegation on Monday, the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority, Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, said Ghana’s fuel quality assurance framework offers valuable lessons for the region.

He, however, stressed that while member states could draw from Ghana’s experience, each country should adapt best practices to suit its national circumstances.

Tameklo also underscored the importance of collaboration, peer learning and sustained partnerships in building a more integrated, resilient and efficient regional petroleum market.

Responding on behalf of the delegation, Acting Director of Energy and Mines at the ECOWAS Commission, Arkadius Koumoine, described harmonised fuel quality standards as essential for protecting public health, preserving the environment, improving energy security and tackling illicit fuel trade.

The study tour forms part of ECOWAS’ efforts to strengthen regional cooperation and accelerate the adoption of common fuel quality standards among member states.
