The family of the late Apostle Emeritus Prof. Ing. Kwadwo Safo has confirmed that former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, is responding positively to medical treatment following a shooting incident that occurred on Sunday, 21 June 2026.
In a statement issued on Monday, 22 June 2026, the family expressed deep regret over what it described as an unfortunate attack on Adwoa Safo, who it identified as the duly recognised Head of the Kwadwo Safo Family.
The family assured members of the Kristo Asafo Mission, relatives, sympathisers and the general public that the former legislator is in a stable condition and recovering steadily.
“The family wishes to assure members of the Kristo Asafo Mission, relatives, friends, sympathisers, and the general public that Hon. Adwoa Safo is currently in a stable condition and responding positively to medical treatment,” the statement said.
Beyond providing an update on her health, the family used the occasion to address growing controversy surrounding the succession arrangements of the late founder and leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission.
According to the statement, Apostle Kwadwo Safo had in 2017 designated his son, Israel Nana Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Akofena, as his successor and entrusted him with leadership of the church and oversight of the group’s business interests.
However, the family alleged that during Akofena’s tenure, several businesses within the Kristo Asafo conglomerate suffered significant decline, with some collapsing or nearing collapse. It further claimed that key principles underpinning the church’s operations were altered and that Akofena increasingly exercised authority without proper regard for the founder.
The family stated that these developments became a source of concern to Apostle Kwadwo Safo, who subsequently revoked the mandate granted to his son in 2024.
According to the statement, provisions conferring leadership authority on Akofena were removed from the church’s governing framework, after which Apostle Kwadwo Safo appointed his daughter, Adwoa Safo, as Head of the Family and developed a new succession roadmap for the future leadership of the Kristo Asafo Mission.
The family further claimed that the revised succession framework explicitly excluded Israel Safo from consideration for the church’s top leadership position.
Following the death of Apostle Kwadwo Safo on 11 September 2025, Adwoa Safo, with the backing of her siblings, has reportedly continued to serve as the principal representative of the family and execute responsibilities assigned to her by their late father.
The statement alleged that recent tensions emerged after Israel Safo, together with certain elders of the church, sought to organise what the family described as a private installation ceremony aimed at declaring himself leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission.
The family maintains that such a move was contrary to the succession directives left behind by the late founder.
According to the statement, two church members subsequently initiated legal proceedings and obtained a court application seeking to restrain the planned installation ceremony.
The family claimed that several attempts to serve the court processes on Israel Safo proved unsuccessful.
It was during an effort to personally serve the court documents on her younger brother on Sunday morning that the shooting incident allegedly occurred.
The statement alleged that Israel Safo discharged a firearm multiple times in Adwoa Safo’s direction and further instructed associates present at the scene to open fire on her vehicle.
No official statement had been issued by Israel Safo or his representatives at the time of filing this report, and the allegations contained in the family’s statement remain their account of events.
The family reiterated that all children of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo, with the exception of Israel Safo, remain united and committed to ensuring a dignified burial for their father while preserving the succession arrangements he established before his death.
