Africa could pay the price for US-Iran conflict — AU warns as Middle East tensions spiral

The African Union (AU) Commission has raised alarm over the escalating hostilities between the United States and Iran, warning that a prolonged conflict in the Middle East could have severe economic consequences for African countries already grappling with rising living costs and economic uncertainty.

In a communiqué issued on Thursday, the Commission expressed deep concern over the renewed exchange of military actions between Washington and Tehran despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and securing a peaceful resolution.

The AU warned that the latest developments risk further destabilising an already volatile region and could pose a significant threat to international peace and security.

“The Commission believes that these developments risk further destabilising an already fragile situation and threaten international peace and security,” the statement noted.

The continental body called on both sides and all other stakeholders to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could trigger a wider regional conflict.

According to the AU, dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable and sustainable means of resolving disputes and preventing further escalation.

The Commission also highlighted the potential economic fallout for African countries should tensions continue to rise in the Gulf region, a strategic hub for global energy supplies and international trade.

It warned that instability in the Middle East could trigger disruptions in global energy markets, increase transportation costs and drive up commodity prices, with direct consequences for African economies.

The AU noted that higher fuel prices and increased shipping costs could place additional pressure on African governments and consumers at a time when many countries are still pursuing economic recovery and fiscal consolidation programmes.

The Commission therefore urged the international community to intensify diplomatic engagement and support efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions between the two countries.

“The African Union Commission reaffirms its support for all diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalation and urges the international community to intensify efforts towards a peaceful and negotiated settlement in the interest of regional and global stability,” the communiqué stated.

The AU’s intervention comes amid growing international concern that the latest round of military exchanges between the United States and Iran could trigger a broader confrontation with far-reaching geopolitical and economic implications.
