A viral video showing an Osun APC chieftain openly vowing to rig the 2027 Obokun-Oriade federal election has ignited political tension and drawn condemnation from opposition figures, who warn it threatens the credibility of the democratic process.
An alleged threat by an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Olubunmi Obeisun, to rig the 2027 Obokun-Oriade Federal Constituency election has sparked outrage in Osun State, with opposition figures describing the remark as anti-democratic and dangerous to the electoral process.
Obeisun, chairman of Oriade Local Government Area and an ally of long-serving federal lawmaker Wole Oke, made the controversial statement during an APC gathering in the constituency on Saturday. Speaking in Yoruba, he accused the people of Ijebu-Jesa of working against the party and vowed retaliation ahead of the next general election.
“The Ijebu-Jesa people worked against us and now they want to contest an election but we will also work against them. You can quote me anywhere, I Ezekiel Olubunmi Obeisun. If they win, I will rig it,” he said in a video later shared on Facebook by Oke, who has represented the constituency in the House of Representatives for 24 years.
The comment triggered immediate condemnation from Accord Party chieftain Pelumi Olajengbesi, who described the statement as reckless, criminal and a direct threat to democracy. Olajengbesi, who also serves as spokesman for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s campaign council, urged security agencies to investigate what he called a plot to intimidate voters and manipulate the 2027 election.
He warned that residents of Obokun-Oriade Federal Constituency would resist any attempt to impose candidates through violence or electoral malpractice, adding that many constituents were already demanding a new direction after Oke’s more than two decades in the National Assembly.
