Sporting Lagos Return To NPFL With Continental Ambition, Weekend Spectacle

Sporting Lagos are preparing for life back in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with confidence and clear ambition after dramatically sealing promotion.

Sporting Lagos sealed promotion back to the NPFL after a two-year absence on a tense final day in Ileogbo, where a stubborn 1-0 win over Osun United confirmed their place among Nigeria’s elite. Yet the result felt less like a finish line and more like a restart for a club that has never hidden its long-term ambition.

In an exclusive interview with Naija News, the chairman of Sporting Lagos, Godwin Enakhena, believes the club’s second stint in the top flight will look very different from the first.

“Something and more just like we did in 2023 when we played in the Nigeria Premier Football League,” said Enakhena. “It will interest you to know that we never stopped even in the Nigerian National League in the last two seasons.

“Matchdays, especially weekends are different experiences for our fans, all the usuals. The DJ playing good music, the vuvuzelas, the flags, halftime giveaways, good football, a conclusive environment to enjoy the game, and zero harassment from street urchins. These didn’t stop while we were away from the elite division.

“So, it’s party time for our fans on our second sojourn in the NPFL. Nobody does it better than Sporting Lagos. Fans have a reason to want to come back again and again after seeing any of our games, especially on weekends.”

Sporting Lagos return to the NPFL Forged Under Pressure

Sporting Lagos’ promotion was anything but straightforward. The Lagos-based club needed a victory away from home against Osun United at the Lanre Leke Township Stadium in Osun State. They got it through a decisive first-half moment.

In the 17th minute, Alex Leme rose to meet Aliyu Baba’s cross and powered in a header that proved enough to win the match and the ticket back to the top division.

The final stages were frantic. Osun United piled forward. Clinton Lawal responded with a string of saves that preserved the lead and sealed promotion.

The result ensured Sporting Lagos coached by Jeffery Buter finished top of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Conference B with 36 points from 18 matches, one point ahead of Akwa United.

Their return means Lagos will have three representatives in the 2026-2027 NPFL season alongside Ikorodu City and Inter Lagos. It marks a notable moment for privately owned clubs, with Sporting Lagos joining Inter Lagos and Doma United among newly promoted sides not owned by the government.

Lessons from a short first stay

Sporting Lagos’ first NPFL experience in the 2023-2024 campaign lasted only one season. Relegation came on the final day, a setback that forced the club to reassess its trajectory.

Godwin Enakhena insists the lessons learned will shape the next chapter.

“Our target hasn’t changed. Play good football. Compete and win fair and square on and off the pitch. Having been here for four years now, we will take a continental ticket, on merit on the pitch of play. So much was learned in our first season, and this will stand us in good stead this time around,” Enakhena told Naija News.

He pointed to the club’s founding vision in 2021 as proof that the current progress is part of a broader plan.

The sports administrator said, “When we started project Sporting Lagos in 2021, we set a five-year target of where we want to be and what we’re out to achieve. We’ve achieved most of these goals. Sporting Lagos was set up to create a community-focused football club that develops local talent, brings people together, and provides a top-tier football experience in Lagos. It was established to modernise Nigerian club football and offer a positive, engaging sporting environment.”

Sporting Lagos To Share Onikan Stadium With Two Other Clubs

Sporting Lagos’ return also brings logistical questions. Lagos still lacks multiple stadiums that meet NPFL approval standards.

Hence, Sporting Lagos will play home matches at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena (Onikan Stadium), sharing the venue with fellow Lagos clubs Ikorodu City and Inter Lagos.

“Obviously, Mobolaji Johnson Arena because we don’t have any other stadium in Lagos that will be approved by the NPFL,” Enakhena told Naija News. “Ikorodu City play their home games on specific days, and they’re not home every Sunday. This means that the other two teams, Sporting Lagos and Inter Lagos will have their games on specific days also. I really don’t think there will be challenges with pitches because I know that the NPFL will consider this during the draw.”

Champions of a dramatic Super 4

Sporting Lagos players celebrate their 2026 NNL Super Four title.

Promotion alone would have marked a successful campaign. Sporting Lagos went further. They finished the season as the NNL Super 4 champions after a dramatic finale in Ikenne.

The title race involved Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos and Doma United heading into the final round. Inter Lagos beat Sporting Lagos 1-0 at the Remo Stars Stadium, but Sporting still finished top on goal difference after both Lagos clubs ended level on points. Ranchers Bees defeated Doma United 3-1 in the other match.

The triumph capped one of the most competitive NNL seasons in recent years.

Financial boost and awards success for Sporting Lagos

The campaign also brought significant financial rewards through betPawa’s Locker Room Bonus initiative. Players in matchday squads and selected officials received ₦56,000 after every victory during the regular season. The reward structure expanded after the Super 4 triumph to include the full squad and staff.

Sporting Lagos earned more than ₦18 million in total from the initiative. They had already collected ₦16,688,000 during the regular campaign, the highest amount among the four Super 4 teams. Inter Lagos and Doma United earned ₦11,592,000 each, while Ranchers Bees received ₦9,016,000.

Across the league, total payouts reached ₦287,168,000 through 5,128 transactions. Players and officials credited the system with boosting motivation and competitiveness.
