Duduza – As flu season continues to affect many families, nurse Nhlanhla Mofokeng has encouraged parents to take extra precautions to protect young children from falling ill.
Mofokeng explained that children are more vulnerable to flu because their immune systems are still developing. She said parents should pay close attention to symptoms such as fever, coughing, sore throat, runny nose, body aches and tiredness.
“Parents should ensure that children wash their hands regularly with soap and water. Good hygiene plays a big role in preventing the spread of flu,” she said.
She also advised parents to teach children to cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing and to avoid sharing cups, utensils and towels.

Mofokeng highlighted the importance of keeping children warm during cold weather and ensuring that they eat healthy meals rich in fruits and vegetables to strengthen their immune systems.
“Children should drink enough water and get enough rest. A healthy body is better able to fight infections,” she added.
She urged parents not to send sick children to school or crèche as this increases the spread of flu among other children.
“If symptoms become severe or do not improve, parents should take their children to the nearest clinic or healthcare facility for medical attention,” said Mofokeng.
She further encouraged parents to keep children’s vaccinations up to date and to seek professional medical advice instead of relying only on home remedies.
