Entrepreneur turns phone repair skills into growing business success

Kwa-Thema – Nhlanhla Gumbi (36) has transformed a moment of uncertainty into a thriving business, proving that opportunity often begins with a single decision to try.

Gumbi, originally from Soweto, relocated to Kwa-Thema in 2014. He established a growing enterprise in the area.

Gumbi ventured into a journey of repairing phones in 2022. His journey has reshaped his future and has given his business purpose.

“I was unemployed at the time and searching for direction. Then I came across a post on Facebook by Nemisa, in collaboration with HCLS and Vaal University of Technology.

“That opportunity changed everything,” he explained.

Gumbi’s curiosity pushed him to enrol in a cellphone repair training programme held at the NYADA Mbombela offices.

Under the guidance of facilitators, particularly Nonhlanhla Mathabathe, he developed both technical expertise and business acumen.

“The first skill I learned was how to use a multimeter. It became the foundation for diagnosing problems. But beyond that, I also learned how to run a business,” he said.

Although he had briefly experimented with fixing phones during the era of the Samsung E250, it was only through structured training that his passion took shape. Like many beginners, he faced challenges early on.

“Handling delicate components and understanding electronics was difficult at first. I made mistakes, but I treated each one as a lesson. With time, I improved,” he added.

Gumbi completed the programme and decided to formalise his skills into a business. His decision was driven by the need for financial independence.

“Unemployment pushed me, but I also wanted to support my family and serve my community. Many people started businesses through the programme, but only a few are still operating today.

“I am proud to still be standing,” he cited.

The first people who supported his business are those close to him, saying his friends and members of his church, God’s Vision Ministries, who added value to his business.

He cited that word of mouth quickly spread as satisfied clients referred others. Today, Gumbi offers a wide range of services, including smartphone repairs, screen and battery replacements, software troubleshooting, and device maintenance advice.

He has also expanded into business compliance and marketing design services, broadening his reach beyond electronics.

On a typical day, Gumbi focuses on technical work with customer service which includes sourcing parts to assisting walk-in clients.

He mentioned that most common issues he fixes are broken screens, faulty charging ports, battery failures, and software glitches. Despite his growth, challenges remain.

“Finding reliable suppliers and managing customer expectations can be tough. But I focus on honesty, transparency, and quality service,” said Gumbi.

The impact of his work has been life-changing, saying his business has given him independence, confidence, and purpose.

“I am no longer stuck, I am building something meaningful, even while balancing it with a 9-to-5 job.

“One of my proudest moments came when I successfully repaired a phone that others had deemed irreparable. The customer was so happy and even left a great review on my Google profile. That reminded me why I do this,” he highlighted.

Gumbi is committed to uplifting others; he actively shares his knowledge with young people interested in electronics and has collaborated with creatives like Witness Chauke, who designed his business website.

His biggest goal is to expanding his business into a full electronics service hub that provides repairs but also creates jobs and offers training.

“I want to build a team and grow with others, and teaching is part of my vision,” he emphasised.

His advice to aspiring technicians is to start small, be patient, and do not be afraid of making mistakes.

“Stay consistent, the skill will reward you,” he concluded.
