A 29-year-old woman has been rescued from a roadside drain near the Afrikiko traffic light in Accra after reportedly spending the night hiding there to escape a suspected attack.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service responded to a distress call in the early hours of Wednesday and arrived at the scene to find the woman trapped in the drain. She was later identified as Rita James.
A five-member rescue team, led by Assistant Divisional Officer I Alex Amankwah, worked for nearly an hour before successfully pulling her out at about 8:30am.
According to officials, the woman, believed to be a Nigerian national, told rescuers she had taken refuge in the drain after being chased by unknown men she feared intended to harm her.

Following the rescue, she was handed over to the police and taken to the Nima Police Station for questioning. She was subsequently referred to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital at Asylum Down for further care.
Fire service personnel indicated that the operation was carried out efficiently, with no injuries recorded during the rescue.
